I'm not sure where else to post information about a classmate listed in Missing Classmates who, I discovered by Googling, has died.  Kathy Hanna (Kathryn Hanna Honan) died in 2016. I suspect there are others of the 68 missing, and if I come across any I will post here unless told otherwise. http://hosting-22393.tributes.com/obituary/show/Kathryn-Hanna-Honan-103706094

Third grade at Forest View Elementary 1959. Mrs. Dillard's class.  I'm seeing David Bates, Grace Bourne, Sharon Cale, Mac Canada, Susan Dodd, Cricket Geisinger, Nancy Pfeifer, Susan Hamilton, Diana High. Who am I missing?   -- Addendum: Thanks to classmates Kathryn and Nancy who have jogged my memory. Add Kim McGrath and Jerry Allen to the list. And, Nancy Pfeifer is not in the picture. (oops)

Is that Kim McGrath seated at the back, wearing a gray vest?

I'm speechless!

Carol Wright (Benton)

Yes, Kathryn. I think you're right. That does look like Kim McGrath in the back of the room. George -- what are you speechless about? Are you in the picture and I missed seeing you?

Nancy Pfeiffer (Walden)

This is a test, right? (chuckle)   It isn't me in the picture, as I didn't get to Forest View until 4th grade in 1960.  It probably just "seems" like I should be there with the rest of the kids from the "Bliley Road Creek Bus Stop."

I'll throw out a guess for that being Jerry Allen under the gumdrop trees on the bulletin board!  The photo as a whole reminds me of the great popularity of striped or plaid clothing back in the day --- and how cool is it to get a glimpse of "Ye Olde Cloak Room?"  And we were way ahead of our time with a classroom sink...I'm betting we were super skilled in handwashing, which has certainly come in handy in our old age!

Thanks for the memories!

N

Hi, Nancy - Darnit! I could have sworn that was you! Oh, well. Perhaps your lively spirit preceded your actual physical presence at Forest View ahead of your 4th-grade arrival. Great to connect with you. And, yes, the 3rd-grade fashion statements are quite interesting.

Now that I can get really close to faces with my phone, I want to make a few more guesses. Carol, the girl next to you in the plaid skirt might by Nancy Warman. Beyond her against the mural is a boy in a short-sleeved shirt with white collar and horizontal white, gray, and black stripes. He looks a good bit like William Petway, who was in 4th grade with me in Mrs. Coleman's class at Southampton. The girl in the back, far right, standing, with a sleeveless white shirt could be Renae Downs.

I have a class picture taken at Forest View the same day. It's posted on my profile. You can see it if you click to the third picture at the top. I didn't realize until you posted your picture that this same classroom evidently was used for each class picture! I was in Mrs. Briel's class, which I dearly loved. We had just moved to Richmond from Norfolk (Seaboard Railroad transfer). If you asked me what grade was my favorite of them all, it was third grade at Forest View. I, too, remember the cloakroom as something special.

Carol - No, I wouldn't be in that one. I was in Mrs. Bridgewater's class that year. (We were still going half days then, right?) I'm speechless at the fact that you still have that photo and seeing all those young, happy faces.

Wow, Kathryn! You're GOOD at this!! Thanks for filling in some of the blanks (faces that I didn't recognize). And - yes, George. We were still going to school on morning and afternoon shifts through 3rd grade due to the baby-boom overcrowding in Chesterfield schools. During the remote learning challenges of this pandemic year, I've told my adult kids and grandchildren about the half-day shifts that we attended for our first 3 years of public education. And look at us - we turned out JUST FINE!!

...and George, you had the wisdom and good sense to be SPEECHLESS even then!
Heck I'm still working on it and to be honest it's not going all that well.

Kathryn,

I remember Mrs. Coleman's 4th grade class I think at Southampton.  Only I thought it was Mrs. Clark.  Anyway I remember the 1/2 day and the class was in the library.  My most forgettable day in the class was a day I ate a ham sandwich with mayo that had been left to warm in the sun.  I didn't eat anything with ham or mayo for years after that.  In the third grad I remember I was at Bon Air Baptist church for 1/2 day.  Hope all are well and thanks for the memories.

I don't really remember how George Andrews and I became friends, because we didn't have any classes together and we weren't childhood friends.  But I do know that we shared a love of muscle cars and somehow we got together on that.  I can remember driving around with him and seeing how long I could spin the tires on my parents' car.  What an idiot I was back then!  After high school, George and I ran into each other every summer as our children competed against each other on swim team.  We always had a pleasant chat, reminiscing about the old days and talking cameras and photography and still ocassionally about cars.  We were friends on Facebook and his photos were darn good.  I enjoyed renewing our freindship at the reunions.  He was one of the guys at HHS that I will always associate nothing but good memories.  His death has hit me harder than I expected and I am saddened by it and will miss him.

Ned, it was Mrs. Clark, and we loved her!  Kathy McDorman, Debby Wendell, and Ludi were in that class too.  We shared the space with some 5th graders in the beginning, but at some point, more room must have been made to accommodate everyone separately.  Those were the days!!!

I don't know how y'all remember so much!  I'm so impressed!

I moved from Richmond/Chesterfield to Mathews County, specifically, Moon, VA in December. I never thought I would leave the old place but I love it here. One stop-sign town. Country life at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Bought an old school house built in the early 1800s known as Moon Pi on 2 acres near Haven Beach. Come and see me anytime!  Hope you all are well❤️

I'm coming back to Virginia this weekend after too long an absence.  I no longer have any family there and the last time I visited was the weekend of our 40th reunion.  We're bringing our daughter and her ten year old twins to visit Jamestown and Williamsburg.  They're studying American history this year and I remember how real history seemed to me with so many historic sites nearby. If any of you have any tips, I'll check for posts.

You know, I never intended to stay away so long but life just sort sped up. I'm very much looking forward to this visit.

Denys:  if you have time, be sure to run over to Charlottesville to see Monticello.

Suggestion; Google - America's Historic Triangle, for tickets to see all three related sites, Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown. Follow the Colonial Parkway from one end to the other and watch a progression of history unfold. I remember field trips from Southampton Elementary to see these sights. I was back in town for a few years when my children enjoyed their trips, and now from Florida I hear about my grandchildren in Richmond doing the same. Yes, schools continue using the James River Bus Company on these trips. I hope you have fun seeing it all again, this time through the eyes of your grandchildren.

Thank you for the tips and ideas for our historic Virginia adventure. We had a great time. We started with a brief tour of Richmond from St. John's church to the U. of Richmond. Then we were on to Monticello, then Jamestown and Williamsburg. Yorktown was our last stop. I hadn't seen the new visitor center at Monticello and the new Yorktown museum is excellent - very interactive. The grand kids were very interested and enthusiastic. (One of the twins couldn't handle the Williamsburg ghost tour.)

When I was working with students in the Rio Grande Valley of TexasI realized how hard it was for them to visualize the places and events that were so familiar to us.  It's a great trip for 5th graders living in other states.
I'm the small adult. Still waiting for that growth spurt!
