David Latimer Raine, Jr., passed away on September 2, 2024, at the age of 74. David lived his life full of love, creativity, generosity, adventure, and joy. From his college days living at Crooked Bridge in Lexington, Virginia and his summers at Casa Chaos in the Outer Banks, he was known as the life and host of the party. Despite having multiple health challenges, he never let that spirit fade. After being diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) his brain capacity and physical capabilities began to deteriorate leaving him increasingly confused and with dementia, but that did not stop his desire to host and take care of everyone else. Anyone who knew David was familiar with the phrase "Anything I can get you?", as he always wanted to ensure the people around him were comfortable and enjoying themselves even once his condition made it so he couldn't physically provide. David lived bravely and with determination, ultimately accepting his limitations with his PSP diagnosis. He is survived by his wife, Harriet Schanzer; his children, Zoë (Jason) and Joshua Raine; brothers Randy (Beth) and Stephen (Carol) Raine; and a large extended family and group of friends.
David was raised in Richmond, Virginia, a graduate of Huguenot High School (1968) and Washington and Lee University (1972). He worked as a writer and publisher as well as in communications at the VCU Massey Cancer Center. However, his true passions always resided in the arts. Regardless of his health challenges, he always maintained a positive loving attitude and was able to leave behind many beautiful memories in the form of his art, publishing, writing, and photography. He dedicated his life to his wife of 37 years, Harriet, and his two children, Zoë and Josh.
Special thanks are given to all the wonderful caregivers, health care providers, physical and occupational therapists, trainers and friends that offered continued encouragement and support. The family invites friends and family to gather on Sunday the 8th of September at Bliley's Funeral Homes located at 3801 Augusta Ave in Richmond, Virginia. From 1 to 3 p.m. there will be a visitation with the family followed by a short memorial service beginning at 3 p.m. Friends and family are welcome at the family's home afterwards. Another celebration in David's style will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Cure PSP, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, or the Southern Poverty Law Center. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/timesdispatch/name/david-raine-obituary?id=56235352

David was a fine fellow who always stood up for what he believed in. He set a standard of personal responsibility that the rest of us could only strive for. And being a man of letters, one thing he never would have condoned was using a preposition to end a sentence, which I somehow can't stop doing. Sorry, buddy. You lived a good life David, and we are grateful. You will be missed. --Bruce Miller
