DUNCAN, Rebecca Lee Hubbard, of Midlothian, died of complications from diabetes on September 11, 2007. She had a great deal of inner strength that most people never saw. During her 57 years, she saw more adversity than a dozen people would normally encounter in one lifetime. She was beloved by her family, friends, students, caregivers and fellow teachers. She was a compassionate and loving wife, mother, sister and teacher. She had a great smile and the most infectious laugh you ever hope to hear. She had a great sense of humor and loved life, people, children, animals, swimming, skiing, ice skating, roller skating, and Buggs Island Lake. Lee was involved in her children's activities which included Brownies, Girl Scouts, karate and others. She was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer and helped build the original church when in Episcopal Young Churchmen. Lee graduated from V.C.U., Class of 1972, with a B.S. in Education. Soon after, she earned her Master's of Education. She was a dedicated teacher for 32 years with Richmond Public Schools, teaching at Whitcomb Elementary School for her first five years and Broad Rock Elementary for the remainder of her teaching career. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Duncan; daughter, Cathy Duncan; and her parents, Betty and Emmett Hubbard. Survivors include her son, John R. Duncan, of Asheville, N.C.; sister, Betsy Phillips of Atlanta, Ga.; brother-in-law, Mark Duncan; nieces and nephews, Sara, Bob and Beth Morris of Buffalo, N.Y., and Jimmy Robertson of Atlanta, Ga.; cousin, Allan Hubbard, who was like a brother to her; as well as numerous other cousins and aunts. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (General Fund), 2341 Winterfield Road, Midlothian, Va. 23113, or to Richmond S.P.C.A., 2519 Hermitage Road, Richmond, Va. 23220. The Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home is serving the family.
